A Life Changing Adventure
I sit on the porch of my Miami home thinking about how the last couple months of my life have changed who I am. I am simply sitting, thinking, and writing. I close my eyes and I can hear the cars driving by and my Hispanic neighbors talking to each other as if they were a mile apart. I am sitting in a weird sitting contraption called a Crazy Creek, in my favorite pair of shorteralls (short overalls) thinking about how different my life was a couple weeks ago. You see, a couple weeks ago I was in the uniquely beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains of western North Carolina completing my semester at the Outdoor Academy.
I have always been what you would consider an average American teenager; I went to school, got good grades, drove my parents crazy, and did everything a teenager is supposed to do. I can't really explain why I decided to go to this strange school I had barely heard anything about, but the fact is I did, and that decision very well changed my life.
The Outdoor Academy is one out of eight semester schools located in the United States. I spent approximately four months living in very close quarters with twenty-six other students from all over the United States as we tried to build a community while developing a relationship with nature. Since I have been home from my semester at The Outdoor Academy I have been asked countless times how I liked my, "time in the mountains." I always simply answer," It was great. I learned a lot." I've been slightly criticized for such a simple answer but even though my responses are always short they are undeniably honest.
What I learned at my semester at The Outdoor Academy cannot be learned through any textbook or any amount of hours in the classroom. What I learned was the result of a variety of extremely unique experiences that opened my eyes to a new way of life. For the first time in my life I carried everything I needed to survive on my back and went backpacking, I picked up a paddle and went white water canoeing, and I strapped myself in a harness and went rock-climbing. And yes, there were times I was uncomfortable, scared, and even unhappy but what I gained from these experiences was much more than I could ever ask for. I learned about a way of life in which relationships with nature are revered and cherished; where people don't just live their lives, they live them with intention and purpose; where independence is expected just as much as camaraderie. In this unique place I learned the true meaning of friendship and community.

Singer from Miami is finalist in national contest

A Warm Friends and Neighbors Salute to Jouvanca Jean-Baptiste, our very own diva, who recently was chosen a finalist to compete in the Irene Dalis Competition in San Jose, Calif. Jean Baptiste was one of 10 finalists chosen from more than 100 professional singers. As a finalist, Jean-Baptiste automatically received a $2,000 award.
The concert for the finalists was held on May 21 in San Jose, where Jean-Baptiste also received the $1,000 Wagner Prize, given to the competitor who offered among the pieces they performed for the judges an aria by Richard Wagner. A requirement for this award was that the competitor had the correct "vocal characteristics" necessary to perform the German composer’s difficult music.
Jean-Baptiste was born in New York to Haitian parents, but moved with her family to Miami when she was 9. She once said that she never thought about being an opera singer until she was in college. She graduated from Miami’s MAST High School and had planned to study medicine at Loyola University. Then she discovered her passion: singing.
Now 31, Jean-Baptiste still studies with her voice teacher Oscar Diaz Jr., whenever she is in Miami. Diaz is the executive director of Performer’s Music Institute.
"I’m very proud of her," he said.

Paul Kopp Memorial Scholarship Award. Raquel certainly deserves this honor for her academic success and community service. She had 309 community service hours at MAST!
Congratulations to David Tyburski and Paige Owens. Both were honored as the 2011 Scholar Athletes for MAST Academy.David Tyburski received a $1500.00 scholarship from the Orange Bowl Foundation. MAST Academy was also awarded a $1,500.00 grant from the Dade School Athletic Foundation. Paige Owens was also selected as the Miami Herald Scholar Athlete.
Congratulations to Ryan Leibowitz and Kamilah Acebal for their Honorable Mentions for Silver Knights.

Alejandro Santacoloma and Ian Hoek Spaan took 2nd place in this year's FIU Wall of Wind Competition
with their design for a wind mitigating skyscraper design. Along with 2nd place they win $250 dollars for themselves and an additional $250 for the school.

Rowing Champions
Two MAST Academy students, Senior Amaia Sanz de Acedo and Junior Adriana Viadero,
attended the Southeast Regional Rowing Championship in Gainesville, Georgia.
Amaia placed 3rd in the Varsity 4 Category which shuttles her to
Nationals.
Adriana competed in the Light Weight 8, placing 1st, so she will be going to
Nationals as well.
The National Rowing Championship will take place in Tennessee June 10, 2011,
the first day of summer break.

FAA Air Traffic Controller School
If you have or know kids between the ages of 18-31 with a high school
diploma, the Federal Aviation Administration is taking applications for
air traffic controller school. We all have kids and know kids in the
right age group (under 31) and with some effort they could reach a
salary of over $100,000 with benefits in about 3 years! You need only a
high school diploma to apply and credit is given for college on the
exam.

This is a great opportunity and it should be noted that choosing a site
like Anchorage or Indianapolis to train is a likely acceptance into the
training program - after which you can transfer anywhere in the country
that has a tower. I hope you pass this information on to family &
friends.

Coast Guard Cutter Valiant hosts MAST Academy cadets
Coast Guard Cutter Valiant hosts MAST Academy cadets
MIAMI -- The crew of the Coast Guard Cutter Valiant hosted 40 cadets from the Maritime and Science Technology (MAST) Academy Wednesday.
The event was designed to offer the cadets a taste of life aboard a Coast Guard cutter.
The MAST Academy
The JROTC introduces high school students to military customs and courtesies, as well as valuable leadership opportunities. The leadership and experience provided by this program are highly valued when individuals apply to the nation’s service academies.
One of the cadets attending this event has already received an appointment to the U.S. Coast Guard Academy in New London, Conn., for the class of 2015. This visit was particularly significant for this future Coast Guard Academy
The cadets were given a tour of the cutter, followed by an interactive round-robin event. The round robin included six stations with activities led by Valiant crewmembers, which focused on different aspects of shipboard operations. The stations educated the cadets in the aspects of basic navigation and signaling, damage control, deck seamanship and law enforcement. The cadets departed in the afternoon after enjoying lunch in the crew's mess.
The Coast Guard Cutter Valiant is a 210-foot medium-endurance cutter homeported in Miami Beach , Fla.

OBJECTIVES OF THE MAS FAMILY SCHOLARSHIP
To further the education of talented young men and women with leadership potential who, as future leaders in their professional fields, will advance the cause of a free society of responsible individuals, based on the principles and ideals of a democratic, free enterprise society.
The Mas Family, and The Jorge Mas Canosa Freedom Foundation - which manages the funds - are committed to these principles; they are eloquent examples of what citizens can achieve in a free society both as individuals and as members of voluntary associations. Through the Mas Family Scholarships, the members of the Mas Family are passing on to others some of the blessings which they received as the fruits of their labors in a free society.
The Mas Family Scholarship program, which is funded by the interest generated from a multi-million dollar donation by the Mas family in 1997, is currently the largest scholarship program for Cuban-American students in the country.
TYPES OF SCHOLARSHIP AWARDS
Undergraduate and Graduate scholarships are available in the fields of Engineering, Business, International Relations, Economics, Communications, and Journalism. Due to a growing number of students pursuing other majors than those listed above, the Mas Family Scholarship program WILL accept applications from all students of Cuban descent regardless of what field of study they choose.
SELECTION PROCESS
Awards are based on the recipient's academic performance, leadership qualities, potential to contribute to the advancement of a free society, and likelihood of succeeding in the student's chosen career. Each applicant will be evaluated through a two step selection process consisting of: 1.) a preliminary screening committee will analyze and confirm the student's credential (academic standing, grades, financial needs, etc.) and will select a pool of finalists; 2.) a selection committee will make the final determination based on written essays and on character evaluations.
AMOUNT OF AWARD
The amount of the award will depend on the cost of tuition at the recipient's institution, on his or her family's financial situation, as well as on the amount of funds received by the recipient from other sources. Full scholarships cannot be awarded to students who will be receiving full-tuition scholarships and/or stipendiary support from other sources, although such students are still eligible for partial awards. The Mas Family Scholarships are awarded for one year and all students are eligible to reapply in subsequent years. Those who have already received awards and have maintained a high level of performance will be given preference over new applicants.

"Ocean Matters" Scholarships for ages 15+

The program will be held on the beautiful island of Grand Cayman in the British West Indies, July 7-28, 2011. Through Ocean Matters young people:
· Become certified in scuba (earn PADI Open Water I, Advanced, and Marine Specialty certifications)?
· Dive daily on the beautiful coral reef -- whose diversity and abundance of life has earned the reef the title of "rainforests of the sea." ?

· Design and execute a group monitoring marine biology research project undertaken on scuba.?
· Learn about the coral reef's biology and ecology through daily interactive classroom sessions.?
· Identify one hundred reef flora and fauna. ?
· Contribute to the management of the reef, helping to save this important resource for future generations.?
· Have fun!

Ocean Matters is a registered 501(c) 3 nonprofit charity. Our staff of marine educators includes seasoned professionals with over 15 years each in education, marine biology and conservation. Our board of directors includes National Geographic Photographer Brian Skerry and Peter Yarrow of Peter, Paul & Mary.
Scholarship applications are due April 8 with award announcements to be made on Earth Day, April 22nd.
