SUMMER EMPLOYMENT ANNOUNCEMENT

YOUNG ADULTS NEEDED...

The South Florida Workforce will assist young adults to enhance their work readiness skills and
pursue the best jobs possible for the summer. You may qualify to participate in the South Florida Workforce
Investment Board's Young Adult Summer Employment Program if you are:

Between 14-24 years of age

Live in Miami-Dade or Monroe County

A U.S. citizen or eligible to work in the U.S.

Low Income

The selection of youth will be
done by a lottery process.

The 8 thru 10 week program will provide young adults with summer jobs, work readiness skills and an opportunity to
earn
hospitals and community based organizations on a part-time basis earning $8 to $10 an hour.

Coast Guard Cutter Valiant hosts MAST Academy cadets

Coast Guard Cutter Valiant hosts MAST Academy cadets

MIAMI -- The crew of the Coast Guard Cutter Valiant hosted 40 cadets from the Maritime and Science Technology(MAST) Academy Wednesday. 

The event was designed to offer the cadets a taste of life aboard a Coast Guard cutter. 

The MAST Academy is a nationally recognized school of excellence. The school features a four-year high school program with a marine emphasis. The MAST Academy also sponsors the only Coast Guard Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (JROTC) in the nation.

The JROTC introduces high school students to military customs and courtesies, as well as valuable leadership opportunities. The leadership and experience provided by this program are highly valued when individuals apply to the nation’s service academies.

One of the cadets attending this event has already received an appointment to the U.S. Coast Guard Academy in New London, Conn., for the class of 2015. This visit was particularly significant for this future Coast Guard Academy cadet, as she hopes to garner an understanding of Coast Guard operational service through this experience, and eventually earn commission in the Coast Guard Officer Corps. 

The cadets were given a tour of the cutter, followed by an interactive round-robin event. The round robin included six stations with activities led by Valiant crewmembers, which focused on different aspects of shipboard operations. The stations educated the cadets in the aspects of basic navigation and signaling, damage control, deck seamanship and law enforcement. The cadets departed in the afternoon after enjoying lunch in the crew's mess. 

The Coast Guard Cutter Valiant is a 210-foot medium-endurance cutter homeported in Miami Beach, Fla. Its primary missions include search and rescue, undocumented migrant interdiction and counter-drug operations.
