TREEmendous Miami seeks volunteers to help our efforts to re-establish a tropical maritime forest at the Virginia Key Beach Park, by planting native trees and shrubs in an area that was once dominated by Australian pines. This project will help improve the Biscayne Bay environment for both people and wildlife. Because of continuous heavy coastal development, the dune and forest habitats that once
supported wildlife and maintained water quality in the Bay have been severely diminished. Virginia Key is the largest most important area that we have where we can make a positive change in our community.
Please join us in being a part of this restoration project.

Best Voice? Your Choice! 10/9/10
Miami-Dade County Public Schools has a special invitation for you and your family. On Saturday, October 9th, the school district will showcase student talent in a competition, titled “Best Voice? Your Choice!” The proceeds from this talent contest will benefit public education programs. Watch as some of the school district’s most gifted vocalists compete for your vote. The winning student will receive a studio recording session at the Hit Factory, breakfast with award-winning music producer/composer Rudy Perez, and the winner’s school will receive a $5,000 award for the school’s arts program.
The benefit concert will take place at The Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts of Miami-Dade County, Knight Concert Hall, 1300 Biscayne Boulevard, on Saturday, October 9th, beginning at 2 p.m. For ticket information, please visit www.arshtcenter.org or call the Arsht Center Box Office at 305-949-6722.

Seniors - Mahatma Rice Scholarship
Need money?
Mahatma, Carolina, and Riceland Rice in partnership with Univision Radio offer high school seniors in designated areas who wish to attend college the chance to win a two thousand dollar prize by writing an essay. Deadline February 15, 2011
Six winners will be chosen from the Miami-Dade and Broward County area.
Entry forms may be downloaded from mahatmarice.com/scholarship.
All essays must have either a completed entry form attached or contain the information requested on the form typed or clearly printed at the top of the essay. All essays must address the given topic as it is shown on the brochures and on the web site.
"How to Write a Winning Scholarship Essay" is a free download on the web site.
Submissions sent by Certified Mail will NOT be processed.
This program is not targeted at nor does it exclude any cultural, occupational, or academic group. The essay alone determines the winners.
All entries must be mailed to the address on the brochure. Students may not enter online.
The postmark deadline for entries is February 15, 2011.
Entries postmarked after that date may not be accepted. Twenty finalists will be contacted and interviewed at the Univision Radio corporate offices in Coral Gables. The six winners' names will be announced by April 30, 201 1. All prizes will be awarded by May 31, 2011. The decision of the judges will be final. Essays will not be returned. Each winner will receive a check from Mahatma Rice in the amount of two thousand dollars ($2,000). The winning students may use the money for any college expense.

Athletic Physical Exams - 10/6/10
The MAST Academy Athletic Department announces the upcoming athletic physical exams on Tuesday, October 6th, 2010, at 5:00 p.m. at MAST. The athletic physical exams are intended for those students who wish to participate in the Winter and Spring Sports offered for the 2010-2011 school year at MAST—Boys/Girls Soccer and Boys/Girls Water Polo.
All students who wish to participate in M-DCPS athletics must have a current physical examination dated after July 1, 2010, signed by a licensed physician, licensed osteopathic physician, licensed chiropractic physician, or certified advanced registered nurse practitioner, and completed on the M-DCPS School Board Approved Athletic Eligibility form (click on link to download form.)
Please wear shorts and a T-shirt and if you wear glasses or contacts, please bring them with you for the eye exam.
All forms must be notarized before participating in the physical screening. A notary will be available on the day of physicals until 6:00 p.m. A parent must be present and must provide identification. If a parent or guardian can not be present, the form must be notarized in advance. Student athletes without notarized forms will not be able to participate in the physical.
All student athletes must purchase the $30.00 school insurance policy. Please provide a check payable to MAST Academy at the time of the physical. M-DCPS School Board policy requires that all students participating in interscholastic athletic competition must purchase school insurance. Blood Drive - Friday 9/17
Sign up Tuesday 9/14 - Wednesday 9/15. Participating students will receive free food, shirts, and community service hours. Students MUST sign up to participate in the blood drive. Remember, a little blood saves many lives. The Blood Drive is from 7:30 am to 2:30 pm.

Seniors - Hopkins Multicultural Experience and More
APPLY EARLY - APPLICATION DEADLINE SEPTEMBER 27th.
John Hopkins Overnight Multicultural Experience (H.O.M.E.) is an on-campus, overnight program designed for talented and high-achieving high school seniors who are from underrepresented backgrounds. Many Hispanic, Native American and African American students attend this program.This is an overnight program where all travel expenses are reimbursed to students & families. The program this year will be Thursday October, 21 to Saturday 23, 2010. Click the above link and note that the application deadline is September 27th, 2010 at 5pm.
Florida State University http://admissions.fsu.edu/freshman/counselors/admissions.cfm will participate in CollegeWeekLive on September 29, 2010 from 2 pm - 9 pm EDT.
