TREEmendous Miami seeks volunteers to help our efforts to re-establish a tropical maritime forest at the Virginia Key Beach Park, by planting native trees and shrubs in an area that was once dominated by Australian pines. This project will help improve the Biscayne Bay environment for both people and wildlife. Because of continuous heavy coastal development, the dune and forest habitats that once
supported wildlife and maintained water quality in the Bay have been severely diminished. Virginia Key is the largest most important area that we have where we can make a positive change in our community.

Please join us in being a part of this restoration project.

Closed toe shoes, lightweight long pants, long-sleeve shirt and shade hat
Sunscreen and a refillable water container
Shovels, gloves, hard rake and pick axe -- if you have them available to you (we will
have some on hand)

Light refreshments will be supplied.

Best Voice? Your Choice! 10/9/10

Miami-Dade County Public Schools has a special invitation for you and your family. On Saturday, October 9th, the school district will showcase student talent in a competition, titled “Best Voice? Your Choice!” The proceeds from this talent contest will benefit public education programs. Watch as some of the school district’s most gifted vocalists compete for your vote. The winning student will receive a studio recording session at the Hit Factory, breakfast with award-winning music producer/composer Rudy Perez, and the winner’s school will receive a $5,000 award for the school’s arts program. The benefit concert will take place at The Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts of Miami-Dade County, Knight Concert Hall, 1300 Biscayne Boulevard, on Saturday, October 9th, beginning at 2 p.m. For ticket information, please visit www.arshtcenter.org or call the Arsht Center Box Office at 305-949-6722. PSAT Payment Deadline - 10/8/2010

Preliminary SAT and National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test is Wednesday, October 13, 2010 from 8 am to 11:30 am. 9th and 11th Grade Students pay $13. 10th grade students are FREE. #2 Pencils, scientific graphing calculator and social security number are required. See Ms. Ulman in room 7 or Ms. Yancoskie in room 50.

JC Penney Essay Contest ends 10/3/10

Students, ages 13-18, may submit essays about how volunteering makes a difference in their communities Submissions accepted until October 3rd.

Grand Prize Winner: $50,000 scholarship and $50,000 charity donation
Second Place: $30,000 scholarship and $30,000 charity donation
Third Place: $20,000 scholarship and $20,000 charity donation

Plus! 50 finalists are awarded $3,000 scholarship and $3,000 charity donation each.

Print Cartridge & Cell Phone Recycling Program

Please send in all your empty print cartridges and used cell phones for deposit in our collection bin. MAST Academy will receive a donation up to $12 per cartridge and up to $200 per used cell phone. The school who collects the most items by the end of the school year will also win $1,000. If your business has more than 50 pieces, it may sponsor MAST Academy and register for direct pickup at http://www.daderecycling.com/recyclingchamp.php

Blackout Dance Ticket Sales 9/27 - 9/30/10

Ticket sales for the Blackout Dance start Monday, September 27 and ends Thursday, September 30, 2010. Tickets for $4 each will be available during both lunches. Tickets will also be available the night of the dance at the door for $6.
