OBJECTIVES OF THE MAS FAMILY SCHOLARSHIP

To further the education of talented young men and women with leadership potential who, as future leaders in their professional fields, will advance the cause of a free society of responsible individuals, based on the principles and ideals of a democratic, free enterprise society.

The Mas Family, and The Jorge Mas Canosa Freedom Foundation - which manages the funds - are committed to these principles; they are eloquent examples of what citizens can achieve in a free society both as individuals and as members of voluntary associations. Through the Mas Family Scholarships, the members of the Mas Family are passing on to others some of the blessings which they received as the fruits of their labors in a free society.

The Mas Family Scholarship program, which is funded by the interest generated from a multi-million dollar donation by the Mas family in 1997, is currently the largest scholarship program for Cuban-American students in the country.

TYPES OF SCHOLARSHIP AWARDS

Undergraduate and Graduate scholarships are available in the fields of Engineering, Business, International Relations, Economics, Communications, and Journalism. Due to a growing number of students pursuing other majors than those listed above, the Mas Family Scholarship program WILL accept applications from all students of Cuban descent regardless of what field of study they choose.

SELECTION PROCESS

Awards are based on the recipient's academic performance, leadership qualities, potential to contribute to the advancement of a free society, and likelihood of succeeding in the student's chosen career. Each applicant will be evaluated through a two step selection process consisting of: 1.) a preliminary screening committee will analyze and confirm the student's credential (academic standing, grades, financial needs, etc.) and will select a pool of finalists; 2.) a selection committee will make the final determination based on written essays and on character evaluations.

AMOUNT OF AWARD

The amount of the award will depend on the cost of tuition at the recipient's institution, on his or her family's financial situation, as well as on the amount of funds received by the recipient from other sources. Full scholarships cannot be awarded to students who will be receiving full-tuition scholarships and/or stipendiary support from other sources, although such students are still eligible for partial awards. The Mas Family Scholarships are awarded for one year and all students are eligible to reapply in subsequent years. Those who have already received awards and have maintained a high level of performance will be given preference over new applicants.

1. Healthy Lifestyles Scholarship (Deadline: April 30, 2011)
This $5000 scholarship is open to students currently enrolled as high school students or first-year college students. To be eligible for this award you must be under 25 years of age and answer both of the essay
questions.

2. Dial My Dentist Scholarship Program (Deadline: May 6, 2011)This $1000 scholarship is available to students between the ages of 16 and 21.  In the fall of this year (September 2011), the student must be attending College or University full-time.

3. S.S. Scholarship Program (Deadline: June 1, 2011)This $1000 scholarship is available to any student that is 21 years or under, as of June 1, 2011.

Florida Bright Futures And Other Grants, Scholarships And Work Study Programs   2010 High School Graduates

All Seniors, Please carefully read!

This is very important to everyone!!

As of December 1, you may now go on line and register for Florida Bright Futures and other Grants, Scholarships and work study programs offered by the State of Florida. Even if you think that you will not qualify for Bright Futures - there are a number of nice grants, work-study programs and low interest student loan programs that are offered by the state - so please register today!

Please carefully read the information found at link# 7 “APPLICATION CHECKLIST” to better understand your responsibilities in the application process.

A COUPLE OF POINTERS:

1. (#13) Identify the Florida County where you attended high school.  It is in the table as “Dade”

2. (#22) Our graduation date is      06/0 6/2011

3. (#23) “In the fall of 2010, I will be classified as: “Freshman, “first time in college”

4. If you don't know what college that you will be attending...enter an in-state school.  Remember that Florida Financial Aid and Bright Futures cannot pay for out-of-state colleges.

5. (#25) Ignore #25 because you are graduating from High School. 

6. (#26) If you do not know your Weighted / Unweighted GPA, make your closest guess If you r GPA is close to a 3.0 (2.8 or 2.9) put 3.0 anyway. Florida Financial Aid and Bright Futures will get your actual GPA off your official transcript that will be sent by the school.

7. (#29) Be sure to check one of the tests!

8. (#35 & #36) I always recommend that you say “yes” to work-study and “student loans”. You can always deny them later on if you do not need this type of financial aid.

9. (#37) you must authorize your SAT/ACT scores and grades so check yes!

10. (#38) Please read this question carefully and correctly answer it.

All Seniors planning to apply to a Florida 4-year private/public university, a 2-year community college, or a vocational/technical school are required to register. For students planning to go out of state, as a back-up, go ahead and apply by entering the name of the in-state College or university you play to use as your back-up. You never know what might happen.

11.  You must register by the end of your senior year or you will loose your Bright Futures eligibility. In other words...If you don't register and go out of the state of Florida to college and then later return to go to a Florida school, YOU WILL NOT RECEIVE YOUR BF AWARD.

ExxonMobil Scholarship

Named for the first African American to walk in space,  ExxonMobil
Bernard Harris Math and Science Scholarships  are now available  for
2011 graduating high school seniors in school districts represented by
the Council of the Great City Schools.   

Four scholarships for two males and two females -- $5,000 each -- will
be awarded to two African American and two Hispanic students on behalf
of the former NASA astronaut, physician and businessman, Dr. Bernard
Harris.  Deadline for submissions is April 1, 2011.

Seniors - Mahatma Rice Scholarship

Mahatma, Carolina, and Riceland Rice in partnership with Univision Radio offer high school seniors in designated areas who wish to attend college the chance to win a two thousand dollar prize by writing an essay. Deadline February 15, 2011

Six winners will be chosen from the Miami-Dade and Broward County area.

Entry forms may be downloaded from mahatmarice.com/scholarship.

All essays must have either a completed entry form attached or contain the information requested on the form typed or clearly printed at the top of the essay. All essays must address the given topic as it is shown on the brochures and on the web site.

"How to Write a Winning Scholarship Essay" is a free download on the web site.

Submissions sent by Certified Mail will NOT be processed.

This program is not targeted at nor does it exclude any cultural, occupational, or academic group. The essay alone determines the winners.

All entries must be mailed to the address on the brochure. Students may not enter online.

The postmark deadline for entries is February 15, 2011.

Entries postmarked after that date may not be accepted. Twenty finalists will be contacted and interviewed at the Univision Radio corporate offices in Coral Gables. The six winners' names will be announced by April 30, 201 1. All prizes will be awarded by May 31, 2011. The decision of the judges will be final. Essays will not be returned. Each winner will receive a check from Mahatma Rice in the amount of two thousand dollars ($2,000). The winning students may use the money for any college expense.

Seniors, if you believe you have talent in the literary, performing or visual arts, consider applying to YoungArts.org for a chance to become a Presidential Scholar in the Arts and win up to $10,000 in cash. John Hopkins Overnight Multicultural Experience (H.O.M.E.) is an on-campus, overnight program designed for talented and high-achieving high school seniors who are from underrepresented backgrounds.
